Dolphin Airways took to the skies on December 15, 1981, quickly becoming one of the largest commuter airlines in Florida. The airline connected 14 cities across Florida, along with Savannah, GA, and Charleston, SC. By 1983, it served more destinations in Florida than any other carrier.

By February 1, 1983, the airline was flying to 17 cities across four states: Charleston, Daytona Beach, Jacksonville, Key West, Melbourne, Miami, Naples, New Orleans, Orlando, Panama City, Pensacola, Sarasota/Bradenton, Savannah, Tampa, St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Tallahassee, and West Palm Beach. The airline was renamed to Dolphin Airlines in early 1983. By mid 1983, Dolphin began reducing its routes.

After months of scaling back and facing increasing competition from other Florida-based commuter airlines, Dolphin abruptly halted operations on January 18, 1984.
