Aer Arann was founded in 1970 to provide air service between Galway and the Aran Islands. The service later moved to Connemara Airport, and as of 2023, still operates as "Aer Arann Islands." In 1994, Pádraig Ó Céidigh and Eugene O'Kelly purchased the airline and expanded its routes and fleet, launching scheduled services by 1998. Aer Arann introduced UK and European routes in the early 2000s, and in 2010, partnered with Aer Lingus to form Aer Lingus Regional. After financial struggles, British company Stobart Group acquired Aer Arann, renaming it Stobart Air in 2014. The original Aran Islands service became an independent entity. In June 2021, Stobart Air terminated its franchise agreement with Aer Lingus and was liquidated, ending all Aer Lingus Regional flights.
